I am committed to facilitating equity, diversity, and inclusion in science. I lead and am involved with several organizations that aim to increase representation of traditionally marginalized groups in STEM including the ‘Women in Soil Ecology’ (see WiSE tab), and ‘Out in Stem’ (oSTEM) and 500 Queer Scientists networks to promote visibility of LGBTQ+ individuals in STEM careers. Check out an interview I did with oSTEM here and my 500 Queer Scientists story here.
I am also committed to community outreach and science communication and have been involved with numerous projects including the California Invasive Plant Council (Cal-IPC) "Earth Night in the Garden" and Riverside Metropolitan Museum Nature's Lab "Discovery Days" where members of the community can participate in hands-on engaging activities for children as an introduction to scientific concepts and questions. During my PhD, I was active in the Bristlecone chapter of the California Native Plant Society in Inyo county and attended their local field trips and gave presentations on my research at chapter meetings. I also partnered with the Ameal Moore Nature Center in Riverside, CA as a 'guest scientist' for the Junior Science Days program. See photos below!
